A Computational Approach to Meditation
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction Meditation is a form of complementary alternative medicine and has been defined clinically. Since 1957 there has been numerous studies to understand the physiology of meditation. These include EEG, ERP, PET, SPECT and more recently fMRI studies (Cahn & Polich, 2006). Some of these studies have shown that meditation can have positive health effects e.g., reduction of depression, emotion regulation, etc. To our knowledge, no study has focused on understanding the neural basis for meditation using computational modeling although such an approach has been used to investigate related cognitive behaviors such as visual attention (Koch & Itti, 2001) and consciousness (Miranker, 2000). A similar approach can be used to simulate meditation mechanisms. In preliminary work, such a model was developed and tested, based on controlling the dynamics of a single computational element.

A Unique Approach of Noise Elimination from Electroencephalography Signals between Normal and Meditation State
In this paper, unique approach is presented for the electroencephalography (EEG) signals analysis. This is based on Eigen values distribution of a matrix which is called as scaled Hankel matrix. This gives us a way to find out the number of Eigen values essential for noise reduction and extraction of signal in singular spectrum analysis. This paper gives us an approach to classify the EEG signa...
متن کاملA computational model of focused attention meditation and its transfer to a sustained attention task
Although meditation and mindfulness practices are widely discussed in the scientific literature, there is little formal theory about the cognitive mechanisms that comprise it. Here we begin to develop such a theory by creating a computational cognitive model of a particular type of meditation: focused attention meditation. This model was created within Prims, a cognitive architecture similar to...
متن کاملMean-field thalamocortical modeling of longitudinal EEG acquired during intensive meditation training
Meditation training has been shown to enhance attention and improve emotion regulation. However, the brain processes associated with such training are poorly understood and a computational modeling framework is lacking. Modeling approaches that can realistically simulate neurophysiological data while conforming to basic anatomical and physiological constraints can provide a unique opportunity t...
متن کاملبکارگیری منحنیهای بازگشتی به منظور تحلیل سیگنالهای نرخ ضربان قلب در افراد با تجربه مدیتیشن
The current study analyses the dynamics of the heart rate signals during specific psychological states in order to obtain a detailed understanding of the heart rate patterns during meditation. In the proposed approach, we used heart rate time series available in Physionet database. The dynamics of the signals are then analyzed before and during meditation by examining the recurrence quantificat...

The term "Meditation" is defined and the aims of meditation-practice are outlined. The physiological and psychological correlates of meditation, as found in different studies, are described. The need for an integrated approach to the study of consciousness is emphasized. The clinical applications of meditation practice are spelt out. Areas of further research are indicated.
